Health for the Holidays Recap

There is almost no part of our lives that is not impacted by the end-of-the-year holidays. Between Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas and New Year’s there are eating and exercise challenges everywhere we look. There is no better time than when you’re really busy to concentrate on your priorities.

Ah well, things will settle down again and we’ll all get back to a regular pace.

But what will that pace be? Will you resume the status quo?

If you’ve been following the “Health for the Holidays!” series then you’ve been challenging the status quo since October 1st. Throughout the series you’ve done important foundational work to gradually increase your daily cardiovascular workouts and track calories on Fooducate.com. Equally important, you aimed for the peace of mind that would allow you to sleep soundly every night when your head hit the pillow.

We talked about “The Vicious Cycle vs. The Virtuous Cycle,” how to celebrate the holidays without being a buzzkill in “Don’t Be the Raisin House” and avoiding those nasty leftovers in the back of your refrigerator in “I Am Not A Garbage Disposal!”

On the exercise front I encouraged you to try new things in “Comfort Zones are Overrated” and fit activity into your daily life in “If I Can Move, I Will Move.”

And there were some deeper discussions of perfectionism and the need to please others in “Moms Gone Wild,” and a visualization exercise in “A Table of Your Own.”

This week we had the chance to catch our breath for just a moment in the blog “A Christmas Gift to Yourself.” And in the final blog of 2013 “And Many Happy Returns” I suggested that the best use for those holiday gift cards might be a new healthy eating or exercise present to yourself.

The groundwork we performed in the last three months is the perfect launching point. If you’ve been following along, or even if you’re just joining us, there is no better place to be as we look towards January.

No matter if you’re already a healthy living enthusiast or are newly dedicated to it, the New Year is an excellent opportunity to define what it means to live a life that is aligned with your values.

I love new beginnings. It feels clean and fresh. There is hope and potential. There is optimism and promise.

And since this is weight loss we’re talking about there will also be a lot screw ups, missteps and setbacks. Meh, this stuff’s messy.

But that’s okay. There is no failure, only feedback.
