Bloomsday or bust: roadtripping with mom
My mom showed up at the crack of dawn at my house this morning to head to our hometown for the annual Bloomsday run. If you’re not familiar with it, Bloomsday is a 12K (approximately 7.5 miles) run through the streets of Spokane, Washington. That’s a picture of mom and me at the race expo last year.Bloomsday started in 1977 and at 60,000+ is one of the largest road races in the United States. Though I’ve done it alone many times, this is the third year in a row that mom and I have done it together.Have I mentioned that my mom is 75 years young and is getting a total hip replacement in June?
Yeah, she’s badass. The race is tomorrow and even though mom and I will probably walk most of the route, we’ll also be laughing and having a great time. A few years ago my mom had her own weight loss transformation and lost 70+ pounds, which she’s kept off ever since. Her courage and optimism are a constant source of inspiration for me. But the most important lesson she taught me is that it’s never too late to want something better for yourself – and then go after it with everything you’ve got. Way to go, mom! Have a happy, healthy week! – Marilyn |
