3 ways to make your New Year’s resolution stick

Group of New year Resolutions Post it Notes on pink, yellow, orange and green on cork board written with message of diet, join gym, find love, quit smoking and be happy

Giddy up! It’s January 1st, and even though you may have been up late ringing in the New Year, I’ll bet you’re giving some thought to things you’d like to do differently in 2016.

If so, you’re in good company!

The Statistic Brain Research Institute reports that 45% of Americans typically make a New Year’s resolution and, maybe no surprise, the #1 resolution is to lose weight.

If that’s true for you, I’ve got 3 tips to improve your odds of success in 2016:

#1 Clear out the crap!

Ever since I started my own weight loss journey 8+ years ago, my top rule for healthy eating is that “unhealthy food does not cross my threshold”.

My home is the one environment that I have complete control over and it’s my safe haven from a world of tempting foods.

#2 Make resolutions that are very specific.

Vague goals like “I won’t eat any junk food in 2016” aren’t likely to succeed because there’s no measure for success.

When we preload goals with criteria we can measure we can easily see how far we’ve come as opposed to how far we have yet to go.

Positive feedback is much more motivating than negative!

#3 If you want to change the status quo you need to get a little pissed off at it.

It’s complacency that keeps us stuck in the status quo.

When I set off to lose 120 lbs. all those years ago I completely overhauled my life. I was just DONE being fat and miserable. I knew in my core that my life had more meaning than that.

But I also knew that nobody was gonna just hand me the life I wanted. I had to be willing to make the lifelong changes necessary to ensure my success.

Now, every day when my feet hit the floor, I commit to that same principle. I will do whatever it takes to live my best life every single day.

Not only do I think you’ve got what it takes to be one of the 8% of people who actually achieve their resolutions each year, I know you are!
